32 years serving the community!

BSLN has offered community-based literacy and CAEC (formerly GED) preparation programs for adults in one-to-one tutoring and classroom-based instruction since 1994. We’ve helped hundreds of adults in that time.

Some adults find their level of education prevents them from getting a good job and wish to work towards their CAEC (high school equivalency certificate). Others may want to write a letter to their family or read a novel for the first time.

Some adults have gone on to receive their CAEC certificate, gaining them entry into trade programs, colleges and universities. Others have used their new knowledge and abilities to help their children do homework. For a variety of reasons, many have rediscovered their self-esteem and self-confidence.

Message from our Chair

My name is Rachel Smith and I am the new chair of the Board of Directors for the Bedford Sackville Learning Network, taking over the reins from the fabulous Laurie Allain who set the bar high giving 20 years to the role. I am excited to start work during a time of change for BSLN with an all-new board. The board is now made up of four members, including myself, Simon Landry (vice chair), Julian Jones (secretary), and Brandon Burns (treasurer). Simon, Julian, and Brandon are all current tutors with the BSLN and have experience serving their communities in a myriad of ways. Our board has a lot of skills to bring to the table and I look forward to getting to know them and working with them. Brandon will be replacing Tracy Jennings, the previous treasurer, who also did an amazing job and spent 20 years in her role. We are pleased that Tracy will continue on with BSLN as our bookkeeper.

Education is such an important cornerstone of our communities. As someone who spent seven years in post-secondary education, I know the importance of having completed education to furthering one’s career. As a Registered Social Worker working on the frontline with individuals in our community, I see how education can help learners to reach their personal and career goals. BSLN’s new Community Literacy Program educates participants on practical tools including computer literacy, reading, and writing. We all know how important these skills are to navigate our day-to-day lives. BSLN continues to provide a free preparation program for learners preparing to take the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC). Passing CAEC courses enables learners to gain their high school equivalent certification.

I am committed to support the frontline workers and volunteers at BSLN who interact with learners daily as I know they are the experts in running this program. I look forward to finding ways to promote the continued excellence of BSLN, supporting those who support these learners. I am so pleased to introduce myself and to start this new endeavour. I look forward to the challenges we will face together.
